Both technologies generate electricity from daylight, but they solve different homeowner problems. The best choice depends on whether your priority is return on investment, roof aesthetics, planning sensitivity or a complete roof upgrade.

When standard solar panels make most sense

Choose standard panels if your existing roof is in good condition and your main aim is reducing electricity bills at the lowest upfront cost. Panels are mature, widely installed and easier to compare across many installers.

  • You want the fastest route to solar generation.
  • You are comfortable with visible panels on the roof.
  • You want broader installer choice and simpler maintenance.
  • You are maximising output per pound spent.

When solar roof tiles make most sense

Solar roof tiles suit homeowners who want solar without the look of raised panels. They are particularly compelling for high-value properties, self-builds, major renovations, roof replacements and homes where a premium roofline matters.

  • You are replacing the roof or building a new one.
  • You want a slate-like or integrated finish.
  • Your property is design-sensitive or planning-sensitive.
  • You see the solar system as part of the architecture, not just equipment on the roof.

Efficiency and performance

Panel systems usually offer more output per pound and may use higher-efficiency modules. Solar tiles can still generate meaningful electricity, but the economics are different because you are paying for roof integration and aesthetics as well as generation.

Always compare annual generation estimates, not just headline efficiency. Orientation, pitch, shading, roof area and inverter design matter more than marketing claims.

Planning and roof condition

Many domestic solar installations are permitted development, but listed buildings, conservation areas and unusual rooflines need more care. Solar tiles may be easier to justify visually, but they are not an automatic planning shortcut.

If the roof is near the end of its life, solar tiles or in-roof PV become more attractive because you can combine roofing and solar work into one project.
